LATROBE, Pa. (April 18) – The Waynesburg University softball team was swept in a doubleheader on Saturday by Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Saint Vincent College. The Yellow Jackets lost game one, 2-0, and dropped game two, 2-1.
Though victory eluded the Jackets (9-25, 3-11), they were able to keep the most potent offense in the PAC under control for 14 innings of play. The Bearcats (22-6, 10-4), who are tied for first place in the conference standings, came into the day ranked first in the league in batting average, runs scored, home runs, RBI and walks.
Junior pitcher
Stephanie Kotomski pitched well enough to win in the opener. She allowed just two runs while scattering seven hits and striking out five en route to the hard-luck loss. Saint Vincent scored both of its runs in the sixth inning on four hits, all singles.
The Yellow Jackets struck first in the second game on an RBI single by senior leftfielder
Theresa Soknich. Junior right fielder
Cameron Grimes led off the inning with a ground-rule double and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior center fielder
Emily Sorton. Soknich was up next and slapped a single to right field to give Waynesburg a 1-0 lead.
Saint Vincent tied the contest in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out RBI. After Waynesburg was retired in order in the top of the seventh, Saint Vincent won the game in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly.
Sophomore hurler
Lyndi Gareis took the loss in the late contest after allowing two runs on eight hits. She also walked a pair and struck out two.
Waynesburg will begin its final week of the season on Tuesday, April 21, with a home doubleheader versus Washington & Jefferson College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
