CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. (April 1) – The Waynesburg University softball team was on the road today as it took on Thomas More College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets fell short in game one 2-1 and dropped game two 6-2.
The Jackets (7-13, 1-3) started the scoring in the first inning of game one, when junior
Jessica Dorazio reached on an error and eventually came around to score after a base hit by sophomore
Ashley Demarco.
Unfortunately, Waynesburg could not further capitalize upon four Thomas More (10-8, 2-0) errors. The Saints eventually rebounded from the early deficit with a run in the fourth inning and the game-winning tally in the sixth to pick up the victory.
Sophomore
Lyndi Gareis scattered four hits over four innings in the circle and left the contest with the score tied at 1-1. Junior
Cameron Grimes suffered the loss after giving up the game-deciding solo homerun as part of a four-hit showing over two innings of work.
In the second half of the doubleheader, Thomas More started the scoring with a run in the first inning, and three in the second. The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the third when Demarco got on base with a double and came around to score after a single by senior
Haley Payne.
Waynesburg added its only other run in the seventh inning, when senior
Emily Sorton reached third base after two errors by the Saints. She eventually scored on a fielder's choice.
Payne took the pitching loss after giving up four runs on four hits over two innings of work. Grimes closed out the contest by tossing four no-hit innings during which she allowed two runs, only one of which was earned.
Demarco paced the Waynesburg offense by going four-for-seven at the plate with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored. Payne and senior
Theresa Soknich added two hits each over the twin-bill.
The Yellow Jackets return to action at home on Thursday with a PAC doubleheader against Geneva. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
