Softball hosts Geneva

Waynesburg falls 1-0, 5-3 in doubleheader

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 2) – The Waynesburg University softball team dropped both ends of a home doubleheader against Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Geneva on Thursday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets lost the first game 1-0 and came up short in a rain-shortened game two, 5-3.

Junior pitcher Stephanie Kotomski went the distance for Waynesburg (7-15, 1-5 PAC) in game one, limiting Geneva (13-11, 3-1 PAC) to just five hits over seven innings. She also struck out four batters and surrendered just one walk in the loss. The Golden Tornadoes scored the lone run of the ballgame in the sixth inning. Sophomore second baseman Ashley DeMarco collected two of the Yellow Jackets' four hits.

In the second game, Geneva quickly seized the advantage with a four-run first inning, and added another run an inning later to increase its lead to 5-0. The Waynesburg offense started to chip away in the bottom of the second, beginning with a leadoff home run by junior designated player Katey Potoppenko. Later in the inning, sophomore right fielder Demi Lewin singled home sophomore catcher Mackenzie Smith to cut the deficit to 5-2. Unfortuantely, the Yellow Jackets managed just one run over the final three-plus innings, before rain halted the contest in the bottom of the sixth.

Both starters from the opening contest also factored in the decisions for game two. Kotomski was saddled with the game-two loss after lasting just one-third of an inning for Waynesburg.  Sophomore pitcher Lyndi Gareis pitched the remainder of the game, allowing just one run over 5 2/3 innings of relief.

Waynesburg will return to action on Wednesday, April 8, with a road doubleheader at conference opponent Bethany. First pitch between the Yellow Jackets and Bison is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
