BETHANY, W. Va. (April 6) – The Waynesburg University softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bethany on Monday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets fell to the Bison 6-1 in the first game, before rebounding with a 3-0 victory in game two.
In the opening contest, Bethany (10-8, 3-3 PAC) did all of its damage in the third and fourth innings, scoring three runs in each frame. Waynesburg (8-14, 2-4) produced its only run of the game in the sixth inning. With two outs, sophomore catcher
Mackenzie Smith knocked a single up the middle, scoring sophomore second baseman
Ashley Demarco.
Junior pitcher
Stephanie Kotomski took the loss in the circle for Waynesburg.
Game two remained scoreless through the first four innings. The Yellow Jacket offense sprang to life in the fifth, beginning with a leadoff single down the left field line by Demarco. The next batter, junior designated player Katey Potoppenko, doubled to left-center, giving Waynesburg two runners in scoring position with no outs. A groundout by senior first baseman
Haley Payne pushed home Demarco with the game's first run. After a popout, Smith hit a two-run home run to left, capping the scoring in the contest.
Sophomore pitcher
Lyndi Gareis went the distance for Waynesburg to earn her third victory of the season. She allowed just four hits and one walk, while facing just two batters over the minimum.
Smith and senior
Theresa Soknich both went four-for-six at the plate over the two games. Smith drove in a team-high three runs, while both players played error-free ball.
Waynesburg returns to action on Thursday with a doubleheader at The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. First pitch against the Bobcats is scheduled for 3 p.m.
