MARIETTA, Ohio (Sept. 26) – Sophomore defenseman
Sam Nichols' first career and game-tying goal highlighted the day, as the Waynesburg University women's soccer team ended its four-match losing streak by defeating the non-conference Marietta Pioneers on the road 2-1.
The Pioneers (0-9) opened the scoring with a goal in the opening minutes, but the Jackets countered when Nichols scored 35 minutes into the first half to even the contest at one, which was also the score at halftime.
Waynesburg (3-4) gained a lead it never surrendered in the 51st minute, when senior midfielder
Karleigh Murphey scored her first goal of the season and the game-winner on an assist from sophomore midfielder
Sara Hackman. The defense was solid in the second half by not allowing a single Marietta shot.
The Jackets won the battle of shots and shots on goal in the contest, 15-two and 11-one, respectively. Waynesburg's 11 shots on goal tied its season-high set on Sept. 4 against Alfred State.
The Orange and Black have a week of preparation before they begin Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play against Bethany on the road next Saturday. The match is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
