WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 16) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team welcomed Chatham University to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup with the Cougars. The Yellow Jackets used a big third quarter to help turn a seven-point halftime lead into an 84-64 victory.
Chatham (6-9, 2-6) opened the scoring with an old-fashioned three-point play and also held an early 5-3 edge. However, a 7-0 run by the Jackets (8-7, 6-2) erased the deficit and put the home team ahead 10-5. Waynesburg never trailed for the remainder of the opening period and took a 14-8 lead to the second quarter.
Chatham pulled to within a single point of its opposition at 20-19 with 5:44 remaining until halftime. But, freshman guard Julie DeKlaven's three-pointer restored a multi-basket advantage (23-19) for the home team. Waynesburg controlled the remainder of the quarter and went to the locker room ahead 32-25.
The Yellow Jackets grasped firm control of the game over the first 1:15 of period number three. A pair of three-pointers by senior forward
Heather Davis followed by a fast break layup from classmate
Maura Bobby blew the Waynesburg lead all the way up to 40-25.
The Jacket win was never really threatened by Chatham over the remainder of the afternoon as Waynesburg built leads as large as 25 points over the final quarter-plus of play. The victory was the Orange and Black's fourth in a row, making it the team's longest winning streak of the season.
A big reason for the Jackets steadily pulling away from the Cougars in the second half was the play of forward
Addy Knetzer. The sophomore recorded her fourth-straight double-double on 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Most of the production came after recording no points and just one rebound over eight minutes while dealing with foul trouble in the first half.
Junior guard
Katie Gehlmann was solid from the field, scoring a game-high 16 points on seven-of-11 shooting from the floor. Bobby added 14 points to complete a trio of double-digit scorers, and senior point guard
Lauren Blair helped out the offense with a game-high six assists.
Waynesburg piled up 57 rebounds to Chatham's 37 boards, while also out-performing the visiting squad in the assist department (20-to-seven). The Jackets held a healthy advantage in in field goal percentage (51.6 percent to 24.4 percent) and made eight three-pointers to Chatham's two.
Waynesburg will go for a fifth-straight victory on Wednesday, Jan. 20, when it hosts Geneva. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
