WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 6) – Sophomore forward
Addy Knetzer scored a game-high 25 points and pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds as the Waynesburg University women's basketball team earned a 79-63 victory over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) member Saint Vincent at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.
The Yellow Jackets (5-7, 3-2) used a big third-quarter surge to separate themselves from the visiting Bearcats for their latest victory. After holding just a one-point lead (28-27) at halftime, Waynesburg emerged from the locker room sizzling, scoring the first 13 points of the half. A successful Saint Vincent free throw halted the spurt momentarily, but back-to-back threes by senior guard
Lauren Blair and senior forward
Heather Davis capped a 19-1 run that put the Jackets up 47-28.
Saint Vincent cut the lead to nine (49-40) with 1:26 remaining in the third quarter, but the Bearcats could get no closer to victory. A pair of Knetzer layups and a successful free throw by freshman guard
Monica Starre rebuilt the Jackets' lead to 14 points (54-40). The home team maintained double-digit advantages for the remainder of the contest.
Waynesburg shot 40 percent (25 of 62) from the field on the night, including 59 percent during the second half. The Yellow Jackets also held a 53-37 edge on the boards. Knetzer's big night paced a quartet of double-digit Waynesburg scorers. Junior guard
Katie Gehlmann racked up 17 points, while Blair contributed 16 to the victory. Senior forward
Maura Bobby chipped in 13 points.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to the West Virginia panhandle to face the Bethany Bison. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
