WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 1) – Saturday's men's soccer game began with celebration and joy, as the team celebrated senior day. Unfortunately, the day ended on a much sourer note, as Waynesburg saw a 1-0 lead turn into a 2-1 double-overtime loss to visiting Bethany in both teams' Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener.
Things started well for the Yellow Jackets (2-8, 0-1) when sophomore
Austin Zurik opened the scoring with his second goal of 2016. Freshman
Nate Biondi set up the game-opening tally in the 50
th minute of action.
The Jackets kept the Bison (5-4-2, 1-0) at bay for the next 32 minutes. Unfortunately, Bethany managed to tie the contest at 1-1 just shy of the 82
nd minute. Neither team was able to break the deadlock over the final eight minutes and the game moved into its first overtime period.
The first 10-minute extra period saw neither team pull out the win. The game was ultimately decided on the first shot of the second overtime, which came in the 101
st minute of play.
Not surprisingly, the two teams were even on shot attempts (20-20), although Waynesburg held a 12-8 edge in shots on goal. The Jackets also posted a sizeable six-to-one advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore
James Snyder took the hard luck loss in goal after making six saves, all of which came in regulation.
Waynesburg will try to bounce back from the setback on Wednesday, Oct. 5, with a home PAC match against Thomas More. Start time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
