Jackets battle Chatham

Waynesburg takes early lead, but falls 2-1 in overtime

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 22) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team hosted Chatham for its final home game of the 2016 season. Despite being outshot 28-7 on day, the Yellow Jackets scored first and led into the second half. Unfortunately, the Cougars rebounded to send the game into overtime, where they picked up a 2-1 victory.

The Jackets (5-10-1, 2-5) broke up a scoreless tie in the 34th minute when they found a crack in the Chatham (10-3-2, 5-2) defense. Junior Nikki Davis set up freshman Christina Golonka with a touch pass in the box to record the day's first score.

The home team maintained its edge all the way into 2:21 into the second period, when a bit of bad luck befell the Jackets. Chatham attempted an easily defendable shot, but it hit an unwary Waynesburg player at the last minute and found its way into the back of the net to tie the game.

The score remained tied at 1-1 until the end of regulation, sending the match into overtime. Waynesburg came flying out of the gate in the extra period and seemed to have a sure game winner in sight deep in the goal box. Unfortunately for the home team, a Chatham defender was able to slide in at the last minute to deflect the shot away.

A short time later, Waynesburg was whistled for a foul in the Chatham attacking third. The Cougars converted the free kick into the game-winning score that slipped in just below the cross bar.

Freshman goalkeeper Courtney Syfert did all she could to help her team pull off the upset against Chatham, which is the in the thick of the playoff hunt. The first-year standout stopped 12-of-14 shots on goal, including seven in the second half.

The Jackets hit the road for their final two games of the season. The first of those contests will be in Grove City on Wednesday. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
