Jacket men finish weekend trip

Waynesburg tangles with Vassar at Rochester Tournament

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Nov. 27) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team faced off with Vassar during Sunday's consolation game of the Lexington Rochester Airport Hotel Invitational. The Yellow Jackets battled the Brewers over the entirety of the contest, but a pair of late free throws sealed Vassar's 85-82 win.

The first half saw neither team earn a lead larger than five points. Vassar (4-2) canned a pair of late foul shots to grab a 46-43 halftime advantage. Waynesburg (1-3) looked poised to take control of the game after six-plus minutes of play had expired in the second period.

Trailing 59-56, the Jackets put together their best offensive stretch of the afternoon to build a game-high nine-point advantage. Waynesburg ripped off a 12-0 run that concluded with a three-pointer by sophomore Brennan Smith that gave his team a 68-59 lead with 10:18 left to play. Junior wing Jon Knab dropped in back-to-back layups during the surge, while freshman guard Frank Bozicevic contributed four points on a three-pointer and a layup.

Vassar stopped the run with a layup, which was immediately answered on the ensuing possession by a Nick Valentic layup. The Jackets stayed ahead of the opposition until around two minutes showing on the clock.

Unfortunately, the Brewers ended the day on a 6-2 run to pull out the win. Four of those points came on free throws converted over the final 20 seconds of action.

Senior Christian Koroly poured in a season-high 20 points on seven-of-14 shooting to lead the Jacket offense. He connected on a game-high four three-pointers to produce the bulk of his scoring. Knab chipped in 16 points and a team-high six rebounds en route to picking up all-tournament honors. Junior Kendall Paige came off the bench to contribute 13 points and five rebounds.

Bozicevic went three-for-four from three-point range as part of a 10-point effort. Senior point guard Timmy Kaiser swiped away a game-high four steals and dished out a team-high three assists.

Waynesburg opens up Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Wednesday, Nov. 30, when it travels to Bethany to face the Bison. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
