WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 10) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team welcomed Saint Vincent to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Saturday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown. The Yellow Jackets and Bearcats battled over 40 minutes, but a late run at victory by the home team came up just short in a 68-61 loss.
The Jackets (5-3, 3-1) got off to a strong start by building a 20-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. Senior guard
Katie Gehlmann got things going with a game-opening three pointer on the game's first shot. Waynesburg trailed just once over the first 10 minutes of play.
The Orange and Black continued to lead over the first six minutes of the second quarter. However, an 8-0 run in the middle of the period gave Saint Vincent (4-4, 2-1) a 32-26 advantage with 2:24 left to play in the first half. The Bearcats stayed ahead of the host team for the remainder of the half and took a 35-31 lead into the locker room.
SVC led throughout the entirety of the third quarter and built up advantages as large as 10 points during the period. The Jackets didn't give up, however, and made their move over the final 10 minutes of play.
Trailing 57-46, the Jackets used a 15-5 run to pull to within five points with 1:35 showing on the game clock. Senior forward
Haley Delaney scored seven of those points on two three pointers and a free throw, while Gehlmann chipped in five points on a field goal and three free throws.
After the Bearcats boosted its lead back to three points (64-61), the Jackets dominated the ball over the next minute-plus. Unfortunately, Waynesburg misfired on two layups, a jumper and a pair of free throws. The visiting team closed out the victory with the final four points of the day.
Though it came in a loss, junior forward
Addy Knetzer recorded her seventh double-double in the first eight games of the year. She posted game highs with 20 points and 13 rebounds over a team-high 35 minutes played.
Delaney contributed 17 points and nine rebounds, while Gehlmann posted an 11-point, five-rebound effort. Sophomore point guard
Monica Starre dished out a game-high eight assists to go along with five points and four rebounds.
Waynesburg will play its final game before Christmas on Saturday, Dec. 17, when it welcomes Pitt Greensburg for a non-PAC matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
