Jacket women win 80-60

Delaney shines in victory over Pitt Greensburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 17) – After jumping out to a 21-7 lead, the Waynesburg University women's basketball team rolled to an 80-60 victory over Pitt Greensburg. Waynesburg never trailed after falling behind 2-0 to open the game.

The Yellow Jackets (6-3) ended the first quarter on an 8-0 run that turned a six-point advantage into a more robust 14-point lead. Not surprisingly, Waynesburg never trailed over the remainder of the contest and built advantages as large as 28 points in the fourth quarter.

Head coach Sam Jones only played his starters for a combined 98 of a possible 200 minutes in the contest. None of his starting five played more than 28 of the game's 40 minutes.

Senior forward Haley Delaney logged those 28 minutes and made very good use of them. Not only did the veteran post easily her best game as a Yellow Jacket, but maybe the top all-around effort of any Waynesburg player this year. She piled up 25 points and added 10 rebounds for her first double-double as a Jacket. It was her highest career output for both scoring and rebounding. She converted 10-of-13 tries from the field and three-of-four attempts from three point range.

Delaney also swatted five blocks, which is not only a personal and team season-high, but it's the most rejections by a Waynesburg player since Paige Pearce had seven in 2012. She added two steals to her defensive works.

Junior forward Addy Knetzer went for 17 points and six rebounds over just 24 minutes on the floor.

Waynesburg shot 55 percent from the floor and 54.5 percent from three-point range. Led by Delaney, the Jackets piled up 10 blocks, while Pitt Greensburg (3-8) came up with just one rejection.

The Jackets are off to enjoy Christmas, before wrapping up the 2016 calendar year at the Smoky Ballenger Tournament, which is being hosted by Otterbein on Dec. 29 and 30. Waynesburg opens the event against Albion with tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
