WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 10) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team enjoyed one of its best days on the mats this season when it hosted a quad-match at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Despite forfeiting a total of five bouts over three matches, the Yellow Jackets posted a 2-1 record that included an upset of 16
th-ranked York (Pa.) College.
Nearly every Jacket (5-5) that hit the mats on the day contributed at least one victory to the successful afternoon. Four Orange and Black grapplers posted flawless 3-0 marks, including senior
Filippo Crivelli, who scored his 100
th collegiate victory, which was key to Waynesburg's 27-21 win over the Apprentice School (2-3).
Crivelli also notched a 6-3 decision over York's (5-2) Greg Warner, who is a returning All-American that placed fifth at 141 pounds last year. He wrapped up his perfect day by downing Baldwin Wallace's (6-2) Charlie Nash 6-3.
Junior 125-pounder
Tristan Buxton ran his season record to an impressive 19-1 after a flawless day of competition. Buxton got going with a 4-0 decision against Apprentice and followed that up by edging York's Dylan Nuttell 8-7. Waynesburg's leader in overall wins saved his best for last by pinning Baldwin Wallace's Chris Doyle in just 1:22.
Senior
Ryan Shank racked up 13 total team points for Waynesburg. After receiving a forfeit against Apprentice, Shank won his first contested bout by 12-3 major decision over York's Jackson Drum. The veteran 184-pounder closed out his day with a 6-2 decision against BW.
Sophomore heavyweight
Jake Evans recorded Waynesburg's most dominant day on the mats. His pin in 4:17 provided the winning points in the host team's triumph over Apprentice. The returning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champion posted his second match-deciding victory when he pounded out an 8-0 major decision against York. Those four points turned an 18-16 deficit, into a 20-18 triumph. Evans closed out the day with a pin in 3:50 against Baldwin Wallace.
Junior 174-pounder
Derek Hull went 2-1 with a win by pin, while freshman 165-pounder
Dan Verhovsek jumped into the lineup when usual starter
Landon Lohr was forced to injury default in his first bout of the day. Verhovsek went 1-1 with a decision win against York. He nearly pulled what would have been the biggest upset of the day when he couldn't quite finish a takedown at the end of a 6-4 decision loss to BW's Anthony Arroyo, who is an honorable mention selection in the D3Wrestle.com rankings.
Freshman
Adam Rigney added a decision win of his own at 197 pounds against Apprentice. The Jackets went 16-9 in contested bouts, with one of those losses coming by injury default.
Waynesburg wraps up the 2016 portion of its season on Saturday, Dec. 17, when it travels to the Gator "Boots" Duals in Nashville, Tennessee. Wrestling is scheduled to start at 8 a.m.
