GROVE CITY, Pa. (Dec. 3) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team found itself locked in a tight Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup at Grove City on Saturday. Trailing late, the Jackets turned to one of the PAC's top performers to power them to a 64-62 win.
Grove City (3-3, 0-2) led by five following a three-pointer with 3:22 remaining in the game. Junior forward
Addy Knetzer responded by dropping in a pair of free throws that cut the Jacket deficit down to 58-55. GCC responded with two points of its own, but Knetzer did it again with an old-fashioned three-point play that made the score 60-58 in favor of the home team.
Waynesburg's (4-2, 2-0) all-conference star found the basket again to tie the score with a layup on the next possession following an offensive rebound. The Houston, Pennsylvania, native scored Waynesburg's ninth-straight point to move the Jackets ahead 62-60 with 52 seconds remaining in the contest.
Grove City ended the Knetzer-led surge with a layup to tie the contest (62-62), but the Orange and Black didn't' lose its momentum, as senior forward
Haley Delaney knocked down one-of-two free throws with 14 seconds showing on the clock. However, senior guard
Kassidy O'Keefe reeled in a layup on the Wolverines' next shot and drew a foul to head to the charity stripe with one second left on the clock. The veteran went one-for-two on the trip to clinch the hard-fought victory.
Waynesburg grabbed a 16-15 edge after the first quarter, but Grove City responded in a big way to claim a 35-24 halftime lead. The Jackets began their comeback with a dominant 22-8 performance in the third quarter.
Knetzer recorded her fifth double-double in the season's first six games by notching team highs in both points (24) and rebounds (10). Delaney chipped in 11 points to the winning effort, as did senior guard
Katie Gehlmann. Junior guard
Rachel Eng helped out the cause with eight points off the bench.
The Jackets held a 45-38 advantage on the boards. Waynesburg also held a major advantage on the free throw line. The Jackets connected on 16-of-24 tries from the stripe, while GCC knocked down just four-of-six attempts.
Waynesburg will go for its third-straight victory on Wednesday, Dec. 7, when it travels to Thiel. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
