WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 13) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team played host to Bethany on Saturday for senior day. The Yellow Jackets battled back from a big halftime deficit to take a second-half lead, but couldn't hold the advantage in a 67-63 loss.
The Bison (15-8, 11-5) connected on six-of-12 three-point attempts as part of a 54 percent shooting effort in the first half. The hot start allowed the visiting team to head to halftime sporting a 39-29 advantage. Bethany built leads as large as 18 points over the first 20 minutes of action.
The Jackets (9-14, 9-7) made good use of the break and pulled to within seven points of the lead (39-32) thanks to a three-pointer from senior guard
B.J. Durham. That trey started a 15-4 run by Waynesburg that put the home team ahead 44-43 with 14:22 left to play in the game. Ironically, Durham assisted on a three-pointer by junior guard
Christian Koroly that capped the surge.
Bethany regained the lead after back-to-back field goals, but Waynesburg rebounded to go ahead 54-52 midway through the period. Unfortunately, the Bison erased the Jacket lead and were able to hold the Orange and Black at bay over the remainder of the contest. However, the final outcome wasn't decided until the very end of the game, as the home team stayed within four points of the victors.
Durham was one of three double-digit scorers for Waynesburg. The veteran guard racked up a team-high 13 points in the loss. Koroly helped out with 10 points off the bench, while senior wing
D.J. Ritchie notched a double-double on 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Waynesburg will play its final two games of the regular season on the road next week. The Jackets travel to Geneva on Wednesday for a 5:30 tipoff.
