BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Feb. 17) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team traveled north to face Geneva in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup. The Golden Tornadoes fired on all cylinders throughout the night en route to an 81-67 win over the Yellow Jackets.
Geneva (5-19, 5-12) raced out to a 12-2 lead over the first five minutes of play and grew that advantage to 23-6 just over halfway through the opening period. The home team maintained double-digit leads until halftime, when it went to the locker room sporting a 40-27 edge.
Back-to-back layups from sophomore
Jon Knab and senior
B.J. Durham pulled Waynesburg (9-15, 9-8) to within nine points (40-31) of the lead after the start of the second period. Another basket from Durham with 13:59 showing on the clock sliced the Jacket deficit down to just four points, but several Geneva runs allowed the home team to surge ahead by as many as 20 points with 2:29 remaining in the game.
Waynesburg suffered the loss despite a big night from senior wing
D.J. Ritchie. The veteran standout poured in a game-high 26 points on nine-of-13 shooting. Ritchie was a perfect three-for-three from three-point range and five-for-six from the foul line. He added five rebounds and a contest-best four steals to a very productive game.
Geneva shot an impressive 61 percent for the contest, including 67 percent in the first half. Waynesburg tried to counter defensively by forcing the Tornadoes into 17 turnovers.
The Jackets wrap up the 2015-16 regular season on Saturday, with their first-ever road trip to Chatham. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
