WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 13) – Though she was benched for the tipoff of Saturday's senior day game with Bethany to allow
Katie Hoover to have the start in her final home game, sophomore forward
Addy Knetzer wound up stealing the show. The second-year standout poured in a personal collegiate-high 28 points and added eight rebounds in a 70-67 win over the Bison.
The victory combined with a Grove City loss moved Waynesburg (11-12, 9-7) into a tie for third place in the PAC standings. The win wasn't an easy one for the Jackets, however, as Bethany (8-15, 6-10) shocked the home team and the crowd by scoring the first 15 points of the game. The Orange and Black responded in kind by tallying the final 11 markers of the period to cut its deficit down to four points by the time the second quarter got underway.
Bethany led throughout the entirety of the second and third quarters and into the fourth, building leads as large as 11 points in the final 10 minutes of action. However, Waynesburg kept its composure and whittled its double-digit deficit down to one point with just over four minutes remaining in the contest.
A layup by senior forward
Maura Bobby finally gave the Jackets their first lead of the day after playing from behind for the first 36 minutes of competition. The two teams proceeded to trade the lead multiple times over the stretch run, but Waynesburg was able to out-score the opposition 10-6 over the final 1:26 to clinch the victory.
As previously mentioned, Knetzer led the way to the win. The second-year standout shot an impressive 81 percent from the floor (13-of-16) as she dominated the paint. Senior forward
Heather Davis added 16 points to the winning effort, the majority of which came from three successful three-point attempts. Junior guard
Katie Gehlmann contributed 11 points on the day.
Waynesburg plays its final two regular season games of the season on the road next week. First up is a trip to Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, where the Jackets square off with Geneva on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
