PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Feb. 20) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team won its fourth-straight game to end the regular season by defeating Chatham 69-55 on Saturday. The win secured the number-three spot for the Yellow Jackets in the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tournament.
Waynesburg (13-12, 11-7) opened the contest with a 6-0 run that featured a basket and two free throws from sophomore
Addy Knetzer sandwiched around a field goal from senior
Maura Bobby. After Chatham (10-15, 6-12) ended the run with the game's first three-pointer, the Jackets responded with an 11-3 surge to move ahead 17-7 with less than a minute remaining in the opening period.
The Cougars kept things close by scoring the final six points of the quarter, making the score 17-13. Period number two saw the visiting team regain firm control of the game's momentum by building leads as large as 13 points, including the halftime score of 39-26.
The Jackets continued to maintain control of Chatham through the second half. The Orange and Black produced leads as large as 18 points on multiple occasions. With the game's final outcome determined with plenty of time left on the game clock, both teams went to their respective benches, giving their reserves time on the floor.
Knetzer capped a stellar regular season by posting her team-leading 10
th double-double of the campaign. The second-year standout set game highs in both scoring (15) and rebounds (12). Junior guard
Katie Gehlmann contributed 10 points and eight rebounds to the winning effort.
