WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 24) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hosted Chatham on Wednesday in a quarterfinal game of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tournament. The Yellow Jackets advanced to Friday's semifinal round with an 80-58 win over the Cougars.
After falling behind 6-3, Waynesburg (14-12) put together an 8-0 run that included three pointers from junior guards
Katie Gehlmann and
Kassidy O'Keefe. The home team never trailed from that point forward, and ended the first quarter with an 18-12 advantage.
Waynesburg slowly gained control of the contest in the second period before taking a 33-23 halftime lead. Quarter number three belonged to the Yellow Jackets, who out-scored Chatham (11-16) 26-13. The home team built advantages as large as 25 points on multiple occasions, before advancing to the semis.
After shooting just over 27 percent in the first half, the Waynesburg offense found its rhythm and connected on 52 percent of its attempts in quarters three and four. The Jackets were also solid from beyond the three-point line (nine-of-25) and were successful on 25 free throw attempts, as compared to 16 conversions by Chatham.
Four Waynesburg players reached double digits in scoring. Gehlmann led the way with a game-high 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Heather Davis added 14 markers to the winning effort, while sophomore forward
Addy Knetzer notched her 11
th double-double of the season on 11 points and a contest-high 15 rebounds. Senior guard
Lauren Blair completed the quartet with 10 points and a game-best four assists.
The third-seeded Jackets will travel to Crestview Hills, Kentucky, for Friday's semifinal contest with second-seeded Washington & Jefferson. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
