WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (March 11) – The Waynesburg University baseball team ended its stay at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Friday with a game against Western New England. The Yellow Jackets scored first, but it wasn't nearly enough, as the Golden Bears came roaring back with a 13-2 win.
Waynesburg (1-7) notched a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second inning thanks to an RBI groundout by senior designated hitter
Brent Williams and a WNE (1-0) error that allowed senior left fielder
Matt Bensinger to cross home plate. Unfortunately, that was the last time the Yellow Jackets held a lead, as the Bears scored a run in the second before exploding for nine tallies in their half of the third. WNE added a run each in the fifth, sixth and seventh frames to close out the victory.
Junior
Luke Carter started and suffered the loss for Waynesburg after giving up five runs on four hits and three walks over 2.0 innings of work. He was the first of three Jacket hurlers to take the hill on the day.
The Jackets return to action on Wednesday, March 16, when they head to Penn State Behrend. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
