CRESSON, Pa. (March 18) – The Waynesburg University softball team traveled to Mount Aloysius on Friday for an afternoon doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets came one run shy of sweeping the Mounties, but settled for a split with the host squad. Waynesburg (5-9) dropped game one by the score of 2-1, but rebounded in a big way with an 11-3 win in five innings.
The Jackets scored the day's first run in the third inning when freshman third baseman
Sabrina Stankus scored thanks to an error during the at-bat of junior second baseman Ashley DeMarco. Waynesburg was able to make the run stand up until the bottom of the sixth, when Mount Aloysius (6-10) tied the game at 1-1.
The home team managed to steal away the win in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out walk-off single. Offense was tough to come by in the early contest, as the two teams combined for just 10 base hits, nine of which were singles.
Four different Jackets picked up one hit each for the Orange and Black in game one. One of those knocks came from freshman pitcher
Courtney Messenger, who pitched well enough to win in 6.2 innings of work. She gave up just two earned runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out three hitters.
Hits were still tough to come by in the late contest, but the Jackets got some help from Mount Aloysius miscues to rack up a dozen runs. Waynesburg scored three times on groundouts, once on an error, once on an illegal pitch and twice on wild pitches.
Senior right fielder
Katey Potopenko came up with one of the few impact hits of the day with a two-run single. Freshman shortstop Kerri Renzler added an RBI knock of her own.
Renzler scored a game-high three runs in the late contest and drove in two more. Potopenko recorded a contest-best three RBI. The Jackets set their season high in runs scored, despite managing just five hits, all of which were singles.
Senior
Stephanie Kotomski picked up the win in the circle after giving up three earned runs on eight hits, a walk and two hit batsmen.
The Jackets return to competition on Tuesday, March 22, with a road doubleheader at Point Park University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
