LANCASTER, Pa. (March 24) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team traveled to Lancaster Bible College for a Thursday afternoon match against the Chargers. The two teams battled over 60 exciting minutes and despite a late Yellow Jacket comeback, the visiting team came up on the short end of a 14-12 match.
Waynesburg (0-4) opened the scoring when junior
Holly Bachman got a productive day started with a goal 1:37 into the contest. After LBC (4-2) tied the score at 1-1 five minutes later, Bachman found the back of the net for a second time to give her team the lead back. The Chargers took the game's first multi-score advantage thanks to three unanswered goals. The Jacket deficit grew to 8-5, which was also the halftime score, after LBC racked up four of the final seven goals of the first half.
The two teams alternated scores over the first 22:38 of play in period number two. Lancaster built up a 13-9 advantage thanks to back-to-back scores with 6:10 showing on the game clock. The Orange and Black showed its mettle by responding to the Charger challenge with three-straight scores. Junior
Jess Rains started the rally with 5:51 left in the match, and was followed by Bachman and Miller both splitting the pipes. The team hat trick pulled Waynesburg to within a goal at 13-12 with just under two minutes left to play in the game.
Unfortunately, LBC picked up the day's final score and held on for the last 1:47 of play to clinch the win. Waynesburg's 12-goal output was its biggest of the season.
Bachman tied for the game lead with a team-season-high six goals. Rains and Miller recorded the rest of Waynesburg's offense by each tallying a hat trick. Senior goalkeeper
JoHanna Phillips racked up a season-high 19 saves. That mark also tied a personal collegiate high.
The Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, March 29, with a road Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) match at Saint Vincent College. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
