Softball sweeps PSU Fayette

Waynesburg wins 16-0, 25-4

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 29) – The Waynesburg University softball team hosted Penn State Fayette for a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets swept the Roaring Lions by the final scores of 16-0 (five innings) and 25-4 (five innings).

Waynesburg (8-12) scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning of the opener and never looked back on its way to the win. Senior Stephanie Kotomski got the decision in the circle after tossing five shutout innings with four hits allowed, no walks and seven strikeouts.

Freshman first baseman Alex Lawrence went two-for-four at the plate with a double, a homerun, two runs scored and a game-high four RBI. Freshman third baseman Sabrina Stankus went two-for-three with two singles, two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Game two opened in a very similar fashion to the opener, as the Jackets scored three runs in the first, added six more in the second and responded to a Lion (0-6) run in the top of the third with 10 tallies of their own in the bottom of the frame. Junior Lyndi Gareis tossed a five-inning complete game in the circle to record the win. She allowed two earned runs on eight hits and no walks. She struck out five Fayette hitters in the late contest.

Junior catcher Mackenzie Smith and senior centerfielder Jessica Dorazio contributed three hits each, while Stankus and Gareis connected on two knocks a-piece in the win. Stankus added two more stolen bases for four over the twin bill. Smith, Gareis and Dorazio tied for the game lead with three RBI each.

Waynesburg will host its second-straight home doubleheader on Saturday, when it plays host to Chatham to open PAC play. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
