Baseball plays two with WPI

Waynesburg gets swept by Engineers

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (March 7) – The Waynesburg University baseball team continued its run at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Monday by facing Worcester Polytechnic Institute in a seven-inning doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets were swept in the twin bill by the final scores of 4-0 in game one and 5-2 in the late contest.

Waynesburg (1-4) was unable to take advantage of solid pitching from junior Parker Beatty, who gave up just three earned runs over a complete-game effort in the opener. He allowed six hits and a walk, while striking out three Engineers (2-2).

Game two started in a similar fashion, as WPI jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Jackets were finally able to get to an Engineer pitcher in the bottom of the third, when sophomore Tyler Godwin drilled a two-run double to right-center field that cut Waynesburg's deficit down a run at 3-2. The first-year transfer plated junior centerfielder Josh Hausler and freshman second baseman Tyler Reis with the two-bagger.

Unfortunately, the Orange and Black was unable to post any more offense on the day, while WPI scored three insurance tallies in its half of the seventh.

Senior Connor Furwa suffered the loss on the mound after giving up five earned runs on 10 hits and a walk. He struck out three opposing hitters in his first start of the season.

Waynesburg gets back to work tomorrow with a single nine-inning game against Albion. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
