Jackets play home finale

Waynesburg play W&J to halftime tie before falling to Presidents

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 13) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team celebrated senior night by welcoming Washington & Jefferson to John F. Wiley Stadium on Wednesday evening. The Yellow Jackets played right with the visiting Presidents for the game's first half, but period number two belonged to W&J, which scored the 13-6 Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) win.

After giving up the game's first goal, Waynesburg (1-9, 1-4) got an equalizer from senior Jess Rains, who found the back of the net 3:15 into the contest. The Presidents (8-4, 5-0) looked primed for a blowout after scoring the next four points of the evening to build a 5-1 advantage. However, the Jackets maintained their composure and pulled themselves right back into the thick of things by scoring five of the half's final six tallies.

Junior Holly Bachman broke up W&J's scoring surge with her first of the game to make the score 5-2. After the Presidents posted their final goal of the opening period, the Orange and Black rolled off the last four points before halftime. Junior Abbie Miller book ended the 4-0 run with her only two goals of the contest. Rains and Bachman added their respective second goals of the match in between Miller's scores.

By the time the half's final buzzer sounded, Waynesburg and W&J were tied at 6-6 and the Jackets were thinking upset. Unfortunately, the Presidents, who are tied for first place in the ORLC, blanked Waynesburg to the tune of a 7-0 second half to secure the win.

Bachman, Miller and Rains accounted for all six Yellow Jacket goals. Senior goalkeeper JoHanna Philips stopped 14-of-27 shots on goal in her final collegiate home match.

Waynesburg is next in action on Wednesday, April 20, when it travels to ORLC rival Thiel. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
