WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 24) – The Waynesburg University baseball team hosted Thiel for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest on Sunday. Senior ace
Brian Resnik stifled the Tomcats for nine innings and the Yellow Jacket offense built an early lead that stood up throughout the day, as Waynesburg scored a 5-1 victory.
The Jackets (12-20, 10-8) struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore leftfielder
Tyler Godwin got Resnik all the offense he would need in one swing when he teed off on his first homerun in Orange and Black. The two-run bomb also scored junior centerfielder
Josh Hausler to make the score 2-0.
Waynesburg maintained its two-run advantage until the top of the fourth, when Thiel (23-10, 12-5) picked up its only run of the contest. The Jackets responded with two more scores in the bottom of the frame. Junior shortstop
Nathan Mori grounded out to plate junior designated hitter
Ben Miller. Waynesburg reestablished a multi-run advantage at 4-2 when Hausler singled in junior right fielder
Luke Carter.
The home team wrapped up the day's scoring when Miller singled home junior first baseman
Jonathon Kletzli. Waynesburg out-hit Thiel 11-to-four in the victory. Hausler, Miller and Carter collected two hits each. The Jackets left the game a little bit bruised as they were hit by four pitches.
Sunday's solid offensive effort was more than enough support for Resnik, who logged his second nine-inning complete game of the season. He gave up just four hits, didn't walk a batter and piled up nine strikeouts.
Waynesburg returns to action on Friday, April 29, when it travels to Saint Vincent for a nine-inning PAC contest. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
