GREENVILLE, Pa. (April 23) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled to Thiel College on Saturday for the first two games of an important weekend series with the Tomcats. Unfortunately, things didn't go the Yellow Jackets' way on the day, as Thiel swept the twin-bill.
Thiel (23-9, 12-4) opened with a 4-0 victory over the Jackets (11-20, 9-8), before taking the late game 9-6. The Tomcats scored the eventual game-winning run during the bottom of the fourth inning, before tacking on a three-spot in the fifth. Junior
Luke Carter started and allowed three earned runs over 4.1 innings of work. Waynesburg managed just two base hits in the first game of the day.
The Jackets opened the scoring in game two when junior
Jonathon Kletzli smacked a sacrifice fly that plated freshman
Tyler Reis in the top of the first. Thiel answered with a run in its half of the opening frame and grabbed a lead it never relinquished by compiling three more runs in the bottom of the third.
Junior
Derek Whalen got the start on the mound in game two for the Orange and Black. He lasted three innings and took the loss after allowing four earned runs on eight hits.
Junior centerfielder
Josh Hausler led Waynesburg's offense by going four-for-six with an RBI and two runs scored over the doubleheader. Kletzli recorded a team-high three RBI on the day.
The same two teams meet up in Waynesburg tomorrow for a nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
