Softball splits at Grove City

Messenger notches another complete-game shutout

GROVE CITY, Pa. (April 23) – The Waynesburg University softball team hit the road on Saturday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Grove City. The Yellow Jackets pulled out a 1-0 win in game one, but fell 2-1 in the late contest.

Freshman Courtney Messenger was once again able to put the Jackets (16-22, 7-9) on her back and carry them to victory. The first-year righter scattered six singles and a walk over a seven-inning complete game. Messenger struck out three Wolverines (4-19, 1-13) as she improved to 11-10 in the circle.

The game's only run came when freshman leftfielder Cat Allstatt singled home freshman shortstop Keri Renzler in the top of the first inning. Messenger and an error-free effort from the Jacket defense combined to keep Grove City off the scoreboard in the opener.

Waynesburg opened the scoring in game two when junior second baseman Ashley DeMarco grounded out with the bases loaded to bring Allstat sprinting home for the team's only run of the late contest. Unfortunately, the Wolverines answered with a two-spot in the fifth that ultimately decided the contest.

Senior Stephanie Kotomski suffered the tough-luck loss after allowing just one earned run over seven innings of work in the circle. She gave up six hits and two walks, while striking out three opposing hitters.

Senior centerfielder Jessica Dorazio led all hitters in game two by going two-for-two at the dish. Freshman third baseman Sabrina Stankus stole two bases on three tries.

The Jackets wrap up their 2016 regular season on Saturday, April 30, when they head to Washington & Jefferson to face the Presidents. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 1 p.m.
