Baseball sweeps Geneva

Waynesburg pulls out two one-run wins against Golden Tornadoes

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 8) – The Waynesburg University baseball team ran its current winning streak to four games by sweeping a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader from Geneva on Friday. The Yellow Jackets took game one 6-5 and followed that up with a 2-1 triumph in the late contest.

The Yellow Jackets served as the visiting team during both games, despite playing at their home facility, because of a quirk in the scheduling

Waynesburg (6-15, 4-3) opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Junior designated hitter Jonathon grounded out to second base to allow freshman second baseman Tyler Reis to sprint home from third base.

Geneva (2-20, 0-10) answered with a score of its own in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 1-1. The Jackets rebounded with their biggest inning of the day. Freshman Eli Kucherawy came up with a productive out when he grounded out to third base, allowing senior first baseman Matt Bensinger to score the go-ahead run in the top of the fourth inning. Senior catcher Tyler Rubasky kept things going with an RBI single, before junior third baseman Cameron Bernhardt plated the veteran back-stopper with a double.

Trailing 4-1, the Golden Tornadoes quickly tied the score at 4-4 with a three-spot of their own in the bottom of the frame. Momentum swung back to the home team in the top of the fifth thanks to a pair of tallies from its veteran leaders. Kletzli singled home his second run of the contest to make the score 5-4. The eventual game-winning run came home when junior right fielder Luke Carter brought in Bensinger on a sacrifice fly.

A solo homerun by Geneva in the seventh made the game a lot more interesting, but junior pitcher Derek Whalen shook off the long ball to record the game's final out. Whalen worked hard for his first collegiate save, doing so by allowing just one run on a hit and two walks over three innings. He replaced senior starter Connor Furwa, who gave up three runs on six hits and three walks over the game's first four innings.

The Waynesburg bats took a while to heat up in the late contest, as the home team was held scoreless for the first five innings. Geneva tallied a score in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Golden Tornadoes maintained that slimmest of edges until the top of the sixth, when the Jackets were finally able to break through against the visitors.

Bensinger connected on one of his team's three hits in the game, to clinch the win. The veteran drove a two-run double into centerfield that pushed Reis and junior centerfielder Josh Hausler across home plate with the game-tying and game-winning runs.

Pitching/assistant coach Perry Cunningham showed off his prowess with handling personnel by combining three pitchers to produce a win. Junior David Cross responded to getting the call for a rare start by giving up Geneva's only run over the first three innings of the contest. He wound up taking a no-decision and was spelled by classmate Parker Beatty, who gave up just two hits over 3.1 frames. Sophomore Brandon Lawless closed things out by earning his first collegiate save after putting down the only two batters he faced.

Bensinger and Reis paced the Waynesburg offense by both going four-for-seven at the dish on the day. Bensinger doubled twice and posted two RBI. Reis stole a base and scored three times.

The same two teams were scheduled to play a nine-inning game tomorrow in Beaver Falls, but it has been postponed due to the threat of inclement weather. Waynesburg and Geneva will try to make up the contest next week.
