Women's soccer hosts Oberlin

Jackets go back-and-forth in 4-3 setback

WAYNESBURG, PA. (Sept. 10) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team welcomed Oberlin to John F. Wiley Stadium for a Friday night matchup. The two teams had to wait out a 75-minute lightning delay in the first half, but the fans that stuck it out through the inclement weather witnessed an entertaining matchup.

The two clubs battled over 90 minutes of action, but two late scores gave the Yeowomen a 4-3 win. The night featured three ties and a pair of lead changes before the game wrapped up just before midnight.

Oberlin (2-2) opened the scoring on it first shot of the contest, which was released 1:25 into the first half. Waynesburg (1-3) didn't take long to respond, as junior Nikki Davis found the back of the net for her team-leading third score of the year just 1:12 after the opening tally.

The Jackets grabbed their first lead of the night during the 33rd minute of play. Junior Melanie Byler made the score 2-1 when she took a feed from freshman Christina Golonka for her first goal of 2016. The home team maintained its one-score edge as the first half came to an end and the game went into the halftime break.

Oberlin tied the match at 2-2 just 2:46 into the second half. Once again, the Orange and Black was able to respond quickly and regain the advantage. Sophomore Natalie Fortna scored her first of the season to make the score 3-2 during the 51st minute.

The Jackets stayed ahead of the Yeowomen for 26 minutes, before the visitors notched the equalizer in the 76th minute. Oberlin scored the deciding goal in the 88th minute and held off a late Waynesburg charge that included a corner kick in the 89th minute to preserve the win.

The home team was able to keep victory in sight the entire night in spite of being out-shot by a 17-6 margin that included a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman keeper Courtney Syfert played all 90 minutes in goal for the Orange and Black and made five saves.

Waynesburg is back in action on Thursday, Sept. 15, with a road trip to Pitt Greensburg. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
