WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 19) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team hosted Franciscan on Monday night. The Yellow Jackets battled the Barons for 90 entertaining minutes en route to a 3-2 victory.
Waynesburg (3-4) didn't need long to find the back of the net, thanks to junior
Nikki Davis. Davis notched her team-leading fourth goal of 2016 when she took a feed from classmate
Melanie Byler in the sixth minute of play and found the back of the net for the evening's first score.
The Jackets doubled their advantage roughly 35 minutes later when a pair of freshmen combined to make the score 2-0 Waynesburg.
Brittany Woodcock set up classmate
Christina Golonka for her first collegiate tally with 3:06 left to play in the first half.
Unfortunately, Franciscan (3-4) managed to slip its first goal of the contest past Waynesburg keeper
Courtney Syfert just before the horn went off signaling the end of the first half. The Barons tied the game at 2-2 during the 61
st minute of play, but the Yellow Jackets still had enough left to pull out the victory in regulation.
With just over eight minutes left in the second half, Jacket sophomore
Natalie Fortna was tripped up in the opposing goal box, which not only brought out a foul call from the officials, but also set up a penalty kick. Fortna calmly pounded the back of the net with her attempt to give Waynesburg the eventual game-winning score.
Syfert improved her record in net to 2-2 for the season. The freshman stopped six-of-eight shots on net for the victory.
The Jackets return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24, with a road game at Marietta. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
