WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 23) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team hosted La Roche on Friday night for a non-PAC matchup. The Yellow Jackets not only won their first match of the year, but did so in straight-set fashion, beating the Redhawks 3-0.
Waynesburg (1-13) got a stiff challenge from La Roche (3-8). The Jackets needed a little extra work to take set one 26-24. The Jackets were able to regain its focus after a trying first set to grab set two 25-20. The home team wrapped up the victory by outlasting the opposition 25-22 in set three.
Waynesburg's offense put together perhaps its best effort of the season, particularly in set two, when it boasted a .324 hitting percentage. The Jacket attack was paced by sophomore
Jordyn Wyllie, who posted a team season-high 12 kills. Senior
Shannon Morgan also reached double digits in kills with 10 on the night.
Sophomore
Sydni Ayers helped out the offense with a match-high 24 assists. The Waynesburg defense featured a balanced effort that included three players with at least eight digs each. Freshman
Alyssa Proper led the way with nine digs, while junior
Delaney Denniston and sophomore
Cassidy Guiser chipped in eight each.
The Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 27, with a PAC road trip to Chatham. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
