ALLIANCE, Ohio (Sept. 27) – Despite being outshot 28-7 on the night, the Waynesburg University women's soccer team had a chance to down the University of Mount Union on its home field Tuesday night. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets came up just short of victory in a 3-2 setback to the Purple Raiders.
Waynesburg (3-5-1) found itself in a 2-0 hole at halftime, but didn't wait long to open the scoring in the second half. Junior
Sam Nichols put the Jackets on the board with her second of the season, an unassisted goal, during the 46
th minute of play.
Mount Union (4-5) rebuilt its two-goal advantage at 3-1 with a score in the 52
nd minute. However, the visitors weren't ready to give up the fight just yet. Junior
Melanie Byler notched her second tally of 2016 just after the start of the 80
th minute of play.
Unfortunately, Waynesburg wasn't able to produce an equalizer over the final 10 minutes of action. The Orange and Black attempted two of its five corner kicks of the night over the final four minutes of competition, but weren't able to convert either of them into a third goal.
Despite suffering the loss, freshman
Courtney Syfert was terrific in goal for the Yellow Jackets. She logged a personal collegiate best 14 saves over 90 minutes in net and kept her team alive for a road victory.
Waynesburg opens Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Saturday, Oct. 1, with its senior day game against Bethany. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
