WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 21) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hosted Bethany for a matchup of teams tied for second place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) on Saturday. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets were knocked out of the tie, thanks to a 76-69 loss at the hands of the Bison.
Waynesburg (10-7, 6-4) got off to a solid start against Bethany (9-8, 7-3) by building a slim 32-30 edge at halftime. The home team kept its momentum rolling into the second half thanks to a layup from junior forward
Addy Knetzer followed by a three-pointer from senior guard
Katie Gehlmann. Those back-to-back baskets inflated the Jacket advantage to 37-30.
The home team's lead grew to nine points (47-38) halfway through the third quarter, but a 14-4 run by Bethany put the road team ahead 52-51 with 2:15 remaining in the period. A three-pointer by senior guard
Kassidy O'Keefe briefly gave Waynesburg the lead back (54-53) with just over a minute remaining in the third. The Bison regained the edge with a pair of free throws and went to the fourth up 55-54.
The Jackets were unable to regain the lead at any point in the final 10 minutes of play, and fell behind by as many as 10 points on multiple occasions. The loss snapped Waynesburg's 11-game winning streak over the Bison.
Knetzer led the host team with a team-high 23 points and eight rebounds. Gehlmann chipped in 14 points, 12 of which came on four successful three-point attempts. Sophomore point guard
Monica Starre only scored five points, but helped out in a big way with a game-high nine assists. Senior forward
Haley Delaney posted an eight-point, nine-rebound, four-assist effort.
The Jackets are back in action with their second of three-straight home games on Wednesday. Waynesburg welcomes Grove City to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
