GREENVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 27) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team traveled to Mercer County on Friday night for its annual Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rivalry match against Thiel. The Yellow Jackets trailed just once on the night and scored bonus points in six of their seven victories to defeat the Tomcats 32-12.
The win, which was the fourth-straight for Waynesburg (11-13, 2-1), featured eight contested bouts, with the Yellow Jackets winning six of them.
Junior
Tristan Buxton got the night started with a 12-3 major decision at 125 pounds. Thiel (3-11, 0-2) took its first and only lead of the night with a forfeit at 133 to go up 6-4. Senior
Filippo Crivelli continued his hot stretch by notching a 14-5 major decision at 141 pounds. Crivelli has won his last four bouts, all by either major decision or pin.
Already up 8-6, freshman
Shaun Wilson received a forfeit at 149 pounds to extend his team's advantage to 14-6. The Tomcats rebounded with back-to-back decisions at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively, to cut the deficit down to 14-12.
Junior
Derek Hull righted the ship with a 12-4 major decision at 174 pounds. A dominant 17-1 technical fall (3:22) by senior
Ryan Shank at 184 made the score 23-12.
Arguably Waynesburg's biggest win of the night came at 197 pounds, where freshman
Kenneth Burrs made his return to the starting lineup after missing more than two months with an injury. His opponent, freshman Gage Gladysz, has arguably been Thiel's top wrestler this season and bested Burrs earlier this year by 7-5 decision at the W&J Invitational, at which Gladysz won the title. Burrs showed no signs of rust as he won a thriller against the Tomcat standout, 5-3, that clinched the victory.
With the team win already well in hand, sophomore heavyweight
Jake Evans recorded his 18
th pin of the year, sticking his opponent in just 1:07 to wrap up the night.
The Jackets wrap up the dual portion of their schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 1, when they host Division II Seton Hill at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Start time for the senior night match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
NOTE: Waynesburg freshman
Adam Rigney won a 197-pound exhibition bout with a pin in 4:02.
