Women's basketball stops Westminster

Jackets pick up 74-64 road win over Titans

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Jan.78) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hit the road on Saturday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup at Westminster. The Yellow Jackets came away from their road trip with a 74-64 victory over the Titans.

Waynesburg (8-5, 4-2) received double-double efforts from junior forward Addy Knetzer and sophomore guard Monica Starre. Knetzer posted game highs in points (17) and rebounds (16), while Starre went for 13 points and 11 boards. The duo also finished one-two in terms of assists in the victory, with Starre dishing out four helpers and Knetzer handing out three.

After the Jackets built a 32-29 halftime lead, Westminster (5-8, 0-6) used a 9-2 run after halftime to take a 38-34 advantage with 4:33 left to play in the third quarter. Waynesburg bounced back with an 11-2 surge what was capped by a three-pointer from junior Mackenna Drazich that put the visiting team back up by five (45-40) with just over two minutes left in the quarter.

After carrying its five-point advantage into the fourth, the visiting team was able to double its advantage, thanks in large part to a 12-of-18 effort at the free throw line over the final 5:18 of action. Waynesburg's work at the charity strop was a major factor in its latest victory. The Jackets connected on 20-of-32 attempts, while Westminster knocked down 11-of-16 tries.

Waynesburg also held a sizeable advantage on the boards, where it out-rebounded Westminster 48 to 32. The Jackets yanked down 19 offensive rebounds, while holding the Titans to just five opportunities for second-chance baskets. The Orange and Black also doubled up the host squad in assists (14-to-seven) and won the turnover battle 19-to-16.

Waynesburg returns to the court on Wednesday, Jan. 11, with a road trip to Thomas More. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
