Jackets tangle with Titans

Waynesburg falls 3-2 in back-and-forth match with Westminster

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 3) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team hosted Westminster for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup at John F. Wiley Stadium. The Yellow Jackets and Titans battled over 90 entertaining minutes, with Westminster coming out with a 3-2 win.

After 20 scoreless minutes, the visiting team (6-5, 1-1) posted the game's first score and doubled its advantage to 2-0 during the 31st minute of play. Waynesburg (5-4-1, 1-1) was able to break up the shutout before halftime thanks to sophomore Emma Gozzard. Just before the end of the 35th minute, Gozzard tallied her second goal of the season to make the score 2-1, which was also the difference at halftime.

The home team tied the score at 2-2 just over 10 minutes into period number. Senior Melanie Byler scored her third goal in the last two games and her sixth of the season when she took a cross from freshman Emily Hill midway through the 55th minutes.

Unfortunately, the Titans managed to slip a game-winning tally past sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Syfert with 21:32 remaining in the contest. Syfert had a busy night in net, making 10 saves in the loss. Eight of those stops came in the final 45 minutes of action.

The Jackets stayed with the Titans throughout the evening despite being out-shot by a 22-12 margin. Westminster also held a 13-8 advantage in shots on goal.

Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 7, when it travels to Thomas More. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
