GRANTHAM, Pa. (Nov. 17) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team tipped off the 2017-18 season during day one of Messiash College's Hampton Inn Tip-Off Classic on Friday. The Yellow Jackets fell 76-51 to the host Falcons.
The Jackets (0-1) were led by junior point guard
Monica Starre, who paced the team with 12 points on five-of-10 shooting. She also pulled down six rebounds and collected a game-high six steals. Fellow junior guard Julie DeKlaven chipped in eight points on an efficient three-of-four showing from the floor. She also tied for the team lead with three assists.
Freshman
Andrea Orlosky was solid in her collegiate debut. She came off the bench to score eight points and finish second in the game with nine rebounds over 19 minutes on the court.
Waynesburg trailed Messiah (2-0) 19-9 after the first quarter and saw its deficit grow to 35-18 at the half. Messiah expanded its advantage to 58-31 after the third, before the Jackets won the fourth period 20-18.
Waynesburg took the loss, despite outrebounding the Falcons 47-40. The Jacket bench also out-scored its counterpart backups 21-16.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Sunday, Nov. 19, when they face SUNY Geneseo at the Hampton Inn Tip-Off Classic. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
