WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 29) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hosted Grove City on Wednesday night to open the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) portion of its schedule. The Yellow Jackets ran their current winning streak to three-straight games and put together its best defensive effort of the season to pick up a 57-47 victory.
Waynesburg (3-2, 1-0) got off to a great start by building up a 12-2 lead through the end of the first quarter. A solid second quarter allowed the Jacket advantage to grew to 26-12 at halftime.
The second half continued to favor the home team, which held a 40-25 lead by the time the fourth quarter got underway. Back-to-back layups by seniors
Mackenna Drazich and
Addy Knetzer put the Jackets ahead 44-25. A Drazich free throw nudged her team ahead by a game-high 20 points at 45-25 with 7:46 showing on the game clock.
Grove City (1-4, 0-2) made a valiant run at an improbable comeback by scoring the next 12 points to cut its deficit down to 45-37. However, the Orange and Black turned the tide on the opposition by outscoring the Wolverines 12-10 down the stretch of the victory. Eight of Waynesburg's final dozen points came from the charity stripe, including seven by junior point guard
Monica Starre.
The majority of Waynesburg's offense centered around a quartet of starters. Junior guard
Rachel Eng poured in a team-high 16 points on seven-of-10 shooting from the floor. Drazich added 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Knetzer chipped in 14 points and eight boards of her own. Starre recorded eight points, all from the free throw line, grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, dished out three assists and swiped away five steals.
Waynesburg held a sizeable 42-34 advantage on the glass. The home team also enjoyed a noticeable edge at the free throw line, where it connected on 17-of-24 attempts. GCC posted a seven-for-10 showing at the stripe.
The Jackets hit the road for a PAC showdown with Saint Vincent on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
