LATROBE, Pa. (Feb. 1) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team looked primed for victory during Wednesday night's road game against Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Saint Vincent. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets' hopes for victory were dashed on a last-second three-pointer that gave the host Bearcats a 54-52 win.
Waynesburg (12-8, 9-4) rolled into the fourth quarter. After building a 31-28 halftime advantage, the Jackets outscored Saint Vincent (12-8, 9-4) 16-8 in period number three. However, the home team pulled to within a point at 52-51 with just six seconds left in the contest.
The Bearcats knocked down the game-winning basket with one second showing on the clock. Waynesburg got off a desperation heave to salvage the win, but the shot did not go down.
Junior forward
Addy Knetzer provided Waynesburg's biggest highlight of the night by scoring her 1,000
th collegiate point in the loss. Knetzer posted her 12
th double-double of the season by setting game highs in points (17) and rebounds (11).
Senior forward
Haley Delaney recorded her fourth double-double of the year with 15 points and 11 rebounds. She also blocked a game-high four shots. Sophomore point guard
Monica Starre added 11 points in the loss.
The game was ultimately lost for Waynesburg at the free throw line and behind the three-point arc. The Jackets connected on just one-of-15 tries from long range and converted only nine-of-20 tries from the charity stripe. Saint Vincent, on the other hand, recorded eight three-pointers.
The Orange and Black will look to bounce back during Saturday's home game against Westminster. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
