Baseball wins in extra innings

Waynesburg downs Neumann 6-5 in 10

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (Feb. 28) – It took an extra inning of play and a lot of drama, but the Waynesburg University baseball team won its second-straight game at the Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational. The Yellow Jackets played 10 innings against Neumann, before coming out on top in a 6-5 contest.

Waynesburg (2-4) fell behind 1-0 after the Knights (2-1) tallied the game's first run in the top of the third inning. The Jackets responded to the challenge with a three-spot in the bottom of the fourth. The senior trio of third baseman Cameron Bernhardt, short stop Nathan Mori and center fielder Josh Hausler each recorded an RBI during the frame.

Neumann regained the lead in its half of the sixth inning with three runs that made the score 4-3. The Knights' lead expanded to four runs with their final score of the day being posted in the seventh.

Trailing 5-3, the Jackets tied the score up thanks to a two-spot in the seventh. Senior designated hitter Justin Davey cut the deficit in half with an RBI single, before junior leftfielder Tyler Godwin produced his biggest hit of the young season: a two-out run-scoring single that made the score 5-5.

After neither team scored in the eighth or ninth inning, senior pitcher Scott Hefty shut down Neumann in the top of the 10th, allowing just a walk in the frame. Waynesburg walked off with the victory in the bottom of the inning when sophomore second baseman Tyler Reis slipped a single down the left field line that brought freshman catcher John Przbylinski home with the game-winning run.

The Jackets came up with easily their best offensive effort of the Spring Break trip. Nine different players notched at least one hit each during a 14-knock outburst. Five of those individuals each collected a pair of base knocks. Przbylinski scored a pair of runs during the victory.

Hefty twirled four fantastic innings of relief to pick up the pitching victory. The veteran allowed just a hit and a walk during the appearance and struck out five Knights to notch the win. Junior Noah Lolley got the start and put forth a respectable effort on the mound. He allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on eight hits and two walks over 5.1 innings of work.

Waynesburg is off tomorrow and will next be in action on Thursday, when it plays a doubleheader against Finlandia. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
