WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 24) – The Waynesburg University baseball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Friday afternoon with a nine-inning game against Westminster. A fine pitching performance from senior
Luke Carter wasn't enough against the Titans, who downed the Yellow Jackets 2-0.
Westminster (4-8, 1-0) picked up both of its runs, one of which was unearned, in the top of the first inning. After that, Carter and the defense were able to limit the visiting team to just two base hits over the final eight frames of play.
Waynesburg's (5-7, 0-1) best chances to break up the shutout came in the sixth and eighth innings, during which the home team put multiple runners on base. Unfortunately, Westminster was able to slam the door on the Jacket bats on both occasions.
Carter struck out seven batters over nine outstanding innings on the mound. All four of the hits he gave up were singles and he walked just three opposing hitters.
The same two teams are scheduled to square off tomorrow in New Wilmington in a seven-inning conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
