NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (March 25) – One day after being shut out by Westminster, the Waynesburg University bats roared back in full force during Saturday's seven-inning doubleheader. That offense was the driving force behind the Yellow Jackets sweeping the Titans and winning the season series 2-1.
Waynesburg (7-7, 2-1) used a big seventh inning to pull out an 11-8 win in game one, before leading from start to finish in a 10-3 triumph in the late contest. The visiting team cranked out 21 hits on Saturday, after managing just four during Friday's nine-inning setback.
Trailing 8-5 heading into the top of the seventh, the Jackets loaded the bases with one out on the board for senior third baseman
Cameron Bernhardt, who was hit by a pitch to bring the first run of the frame home. The next batter, freshman outfielder
Addis Crouch, came up big in a clutch situation with a two-run single that tied the score at 8-8.
Westminster (4-10, 1-2) put itself in position to end the rally with a lineout, but senior shortstop
Nate Mori got to play hero with a two-out double that put the Jackets up 9-8. After a walk reloaded the bases, a Titan error allowed two crucial insurance runs to sprint home.
To the home team's credit, it didn't give up the fight, as Westminster loaded the bases with two outs. However, freshman
Mason Miller came in from the bullpen and struck out the one batter he faced to secure the save and the win.
After senior
Jacob Meyer started and worked the first 4.1 innings on the mound, freshman
Jonny Kutchman worked the next 1.1 frames and gave up two runs on five hits. Senior
Scott Hefty improved to 2-1 on the season after scattering two hits and a walk over an inning of work.
Game two was a much less dramatic affair for the visiting team, which took a 5-0 lead after an inning and a half thanks to a pair of homeruns by sophomore
Tyler Reis. The Jackets added two more runs in the third and a three-spot in the sixth en route to the victory.
The offensive outburst was more than enough support for senior starting pitch
Derek Whalen, who improved his record on the hill to 2-1 for the year. Whalen gave up three earned runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out five Titans.
Reis and senior first baseman
Jonathon Kletzli were almost unstoppable at the plate over the sweep. Kletzli went five-for-six with two homeruns, a walk and he was hit by a pitch. He drove in six runs and scored twice.
Reis collected six hits in eight at-bats with six RBI and three runs scored. He homered twice and doubled, while also drawing a walk.
Speaking of free passes, Waynesburg not only drew eight walks, but Jacket batters were also hit seven times. The Orange and Black also played error-free defense and stole five bases on five attempts.
Waynesburg is back in action on Tuesday, when it hosts another President's Athletic Conference (PAC) rival in Thomas More for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
