Softball plays host to Carlow

Waynesburg earns tie in game two

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 27) – The Waynesburg University softball team welcomed NAIA member Carlow to town on Monday for a seven-inning doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets dropped the opener 7-3 before playing the Celtics to a 4-4 tie.

Game one saw the Celtics (6-4-1) build a 7-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning of the opener. Sophomore Keri Renzler drove in a run in the sixth, before a double steal produced the game's last run in the seventh.

Four Jacket (4-9-1) errors played a major role in the home team's downfall, as five of the runs given up by senior starting pitcher Lyndi Gareis were of the unearned variety. Gareis yielded 10 hits and two walks, while striking out four Carlow batters.

Game two got off to a much stronger start for Waynesburg. After Carlow scored in the top of the first inning, sophomore first baseman Alex Lawrence recorded the first of her two RBI in the late contest to knot things up in the bottom of the frame.

The Jackets took their first lead of twin-bill when they strung together three-straight two-out hits in the fifth to go up 4-1. Unfortunately, the Celtics managed to string together three runs in the top of the seventh to things up. Waynesburg was unable to score in its half of the inning and the game was called due to darkness.

Sophomore Courtney Messenger worked all seven innings of game two. Three of the four runs she gave up were earned on seven hits and a walk. Messenger struck out three Celtics.

Sophomore first baseman Alex Lawrence led the Jackets at the plate by going four-for-eight with two doubles and two RBI. Sophomore outfielder Cat Allstatt also hit .500 over the doubleheader (3-for-6). Messenger and freshman Rachel Skon collected three hits each.

A busy week on the diamond continues for Waynesburg on Wednesday, when it plays host to Point Park for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
