WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 29) – The Waynesburg University baseball team welcomed Thomas More to town for a seven-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets earned a split with the Saints thanks in large part to a pair of solid freshman pitching performances.
Waynesburg (8-8, 3-2) fell 4-1 in game one, but rebounded with a tough fought 3-2 victory over the Saints (10-5, 3-2). The victory snapped Thomas More's five-game winning streak over the Jackets.
Freshman
Mason Miller toed the rubber in the early contest for the home team. He allowed four earned runs on 10 hits and just one walk. The rookie righty recorded five strikeouts in the complete-game effort.
Thomas More did most of its damage while picking three runs in the top of the third inning. The Jackets cut into the lead with an RBI double in the fourth inning courtesy of senior catcher
Ben Miller. The veteran back stopper stroked a pair of two-baggers in game one.
Freshman
Jonny Kutchman logged six successful innings in the late contest. Though it resulted in a no-decision, Kutchman allowed just two runs on four hits and two walks.
After falling behind1-0 in the top of the second, Waynesburg took its first lead of the day in the bottom of the third inning.
Ben Miller picked up his second RBI of the day on a run-scoring groundout to tie the score at 1-1. Freshman catcher John Przbylinski, who went two-for-three at the plate in game two, put his team ahead 2-1 three batters later with an RBI single.
Thomas More tied the game at 2-2 with a solo homerun in the fifth inning. However,
Ben Miller had one last big hit left in him, which came in the bottom of the seventh. After sophomore second baseman
Tyler Reis led off with a single and moved to second base on a wild pitch, Miller ripped a walk-off double that sent Reis sprinting home as the game-winning run.
Senior
Scott Hefty came in out of the bullpen to close up the victory. He gave up a hit and a walk in his one inning of work, but also notched a strikeout with two runners on and two outs on the board.
Reis and Przbylinski paced the Waynesburg offense in game two by both collecting two hits. Junior outfielder
Tyler Godwin drew a pair of walks in the win, giving him a conference-best 16 free passes.
The Jackets continue a big week of conference play on Friday, March 31, when they travel to Washington & Jefferson for a nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
