GREENVILLE, Pa. (March 29) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team traveled to Thiel for an Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) match on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets trailed by just three goals late in the second half, but couldn't complete their comeback during a 17-11 loss to the Tomcats.
Thiel (1-4, 1-0) took a 3-0 lead after just over two minutes of play. Waynesburg (0-6, 0-2) got on the board during the fifth minute of play courtesy of senior
Abbie Miller. The Tomcats answered with three more scores to take a 6-1 advantage.
Goals by seniors
Danielle Beckford and
Holly Bachman trimmed the deficit back to three goals late in the opening period and set off a back-and-forth run of scoring from both sides. By the time the dust had settled on the first half, Waynesburg trailed 9-6 heading into halftime.
The second half started much like the first, in that a quick start for the home squad allowed it to build a sizeable 13-7 lead. Waynesburg answered with a team hat trick comprised of goals by Miller, Bachman and senior
Kaitlyn Wetzel to cut its deficit in half (13-10).
The two teams traded goals, making the score 14-11 with just under 10 minutes showing on the clock. Unfortunately, the Tomcats closed out the contest with the final three scores of the evening.
Miller's four goals are the most tallied by a Waynesburg player in a game this year. Bachman notched a hat trick, while Beckford twice split the pipes.
Freshman goalkeeper
Christina Bauer racked up 13 saves over 60 minutes in net.
Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, April 1, with a road trip to ORLC opponent The College of Mt. St. Joseph. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
