Lacrosse opens 2017 season

Waynesburg falls to Franciscan

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 8) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team opened its 2017 season on Wednesday at Waynesburg Central High School. The Yellow Jackets welcomed Franciscan to town and fell 19-5 to the Barons.

Things started well for the Jackets (0-1), as senior Brandi Rohal opened the scoring with a goal during the fourth minute of play. Unfortunately, that was Waynesburg's last lead of the contest, as Franciscan (1-3) tallied the next six goals.

Senior Abbie Miller ended the run by the visiting team with her first goal of the season, which came with 15:25 left to play in the first half. Franciscan ended the first 30 minutes of play with eight-straight scores to take a 14-2 lead into halftime.

After the Barons went up 15-2, Waynesburg's Holly Bachman reached a major milestone in her collegiate playing career by tallying her 100th goal. She is the first Yellow Jacket in program history to reach the mark. Nine minutes later, Miller found the back of the net for a second time, making the score 16-4. She completed her first hat trick of the season with 4:16 showing on the game clock.

Freshman Christina Bauer started in goal and made two saves over 30 minutes in net. Senior Kaitlyn Wetzel relieved Bauer at halftime and stopped three-of-eight shots on goal.

Waynesburg is back in action on Friday, March 10, when it hosts Hiram. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
