Baseball battles La Roche

Waynesburg can't hold lead in walk-off loss to Redhawks

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (April 10) – The Waynesburg University baseball team hit the road on Monday for a nine-inning, non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at La Roche. The Yellow Jackets got a fine pitching performance from senior Jacob Meyer, but a late Redhawk rally gave the home team a 4-3 win.

Meyer put together his best start of the season on the mound by logging seven innings in which he gave up just two runs, both of which were earned, on six hits and no walks. The senior righty struck out two Redhawks.

La Roche's (19-6) first two runs came in the seventh inning after neither team was able to put up a score in the first six frames of the contest. Waynesburg (9-15) answered with all three of its scores coming in the top of the third to go up 3-2.

Senior first baseman Jonathon Kletzli recorded all of his team's runs with one swing of the bat. The two-out, three-run homer was Kletzli's fifth of the year and brought in sophomore Tyler Reis and freshman Justin Buberl.

Unfortunately, La Roche came back with a pair of runs, including the game-winner, which came on a walk-off single. Senior Scott Hefty took the loss on the mound after coming on to try and save the contest following a scoreless inning by junior Noah Lolley.

Kletzli paced the offense by going three-for-five at the dish with a double and the homer. Reis and junior leftfielder Tyler Godwin added two hits each in the loss.

The Jackets return to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Thursday, April 13, when they host Geneva for a nine-inning contest. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 4:30 p.m.
