WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 13) – The Waynesburg University baseball team played host to Geneva for a nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game on Thursday. The Yellow Jackets wound up on the wrong end of a 7-3 final score.
Geneva (8-18, 2-10) built a 2-0 lead with scores in the first and second innings. Waynesburg (9-16, 3-7) got on the board when sophomore second baseman
Tyler Reis teed off on his conference-leading seventh homerun of the season. The solo shot cut the Jacket deficit down to 2-1.
The Golden Tornadoes extended their lead to 4-1 with a pair of scores in the fifth and maintained the three-run advantage until the eighth inning. The home team posted its second run thanks to a bases-loaded balk and pulled to within a run of tying the score on a fielder's choice RBI by junior leftfielder
Tyler Godwin.
Unfortunately, Geneva wound up with the last laugh, as it came up with a trio of insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning. Waynesburg put two runners on base in the bottom of the frame, but was unable to push any scores across the plate.
Senior
Luke Carter took the loss on the mound after allowing four runs, all of which were earned, on nine hits and two walks over six innings. Carter racked up seven strikeouts over the start.
Freshman
Jonny Kutchman and senior
Scott Hefty combined to pitch the final three innings of the loss.
Senior centerfielder
Josh Hausler recorded two of Waynesburg's three hits. He singled, tripled, drew two walks and scored a run.
The same two teams are scheduled to face each other tomorrow in Beaver Falls for a seven-inning doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 11 a.m.
