WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 22) – The Waynesburg University softball team hosted Grove City on Saturday morning for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. Sophomore pitcher
Courtney Messenger pitched the Yellow Jackets to a 5-0 win in the opener, but the Wolverines rebounded with an 8-2 victory in the late contest.
Messenger limited Grove City (12-18, 2-12) to just six singles in the Jacket (13-20-1, 6-8) victory. The second-year ace walked two and struck out three in the circle.
Sophomore first baseman
Alex Lawrence led an 11-hit Waynesburg attack by going three-for-three with two RBI, a run scored and her PAC-leading 17
th double of the season. Freshman third baseman
Cheyenne Wasko also went three-for-three with a run scored.
Another member of the young Jacket infield, freshman catcher
Rachel Skon, logged two hits in three at-bats with a double and a run scored.
Lawrence singled in the eventual game-winning score in the bottom of the first inning. The Jackets picked up a trio of insurance runs in the third, thanks to an RBI single by sophomore shortstop
Keri Renzler, an RBI double by Skon and a Grove City error that allowed freshman centerfielder
Courtney Syfert to sprint home after stealing third base. Lawrence drove in her second run of the day in the fifth.
Game two started well for the home team, which took a 2-0 lead after two innings of play. Freshman second baseman
Ashley Dubovich doubled home the game's first run in the first, before a bases-loaded passed ball allowed Renzler to double her team's edge.
Unfortunately, Grove City finally found its offensive rhythm and used it to overwhelm the Orange and Black defense. The Wolverines scored all the runs they needed with a three-spot in the top of the third inning. The visitors added two more scores in the fifth and a final three-spot in the sixth.
Two errors impeded the efforts of the Waynesburg pitching staff and played a role in the Grove City win. Sophomore pitcher
Cat Allstatt suffered the loss in the circle after giving up four runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits and three walks. She notched four strikeouts over 4.1 innings of work.
Messenger gave up four runs, three of which were earned, over the final 2.2 frames. The game-one winner yielded seven hits and didn't walk a batter.
Five different Yellow Jackets picked up a hit each in the defeat.
The Jackets are back in action on Monday, April 24, when they travel to Saint Vincent for a conference twin-bill with the Bearcats. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
